Ateneo outlasts DLSU in FilOil OT thriller
(UPDATED) The Blue Eagles keep a perfect 9-0 record in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles delivered a treat against bitter rival De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup, winning in overtime, 81-75, Tuesday, June 12.

Cote d’Ivorian reinforcement Angelo Kouame muscled Ateneo to a 4-point lead, 79-75, with 39 seconds left in the extra period, which effectively iced the contest.

The 6-foot-10 stud dropped a monster line of 16 points, 18 rebounds and 6 blocks. Star Eagle Thirdy Ravena also chipped in a full line in the win with 17 points, 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 rejections.

Ravena appeared to seal the game in regulation after pulling up for the clutch long bomb, 70-66, with 23.5 seconds left in regulation.

However, Aljun Melecio answered with his own quick triple, 69-70, followed by a quick foul on Isaac Go. Uncharacteristically enough, the clutch big man split his charities, which gave La Salle a window to tie the game courtesy of a cutting Jollo Go.

The streaky Melecio finished with 15 points on 3/12 (25%) shooting from downtown. Santi Santillan, meanwhile, paced the Archers with a game-high 19 points and 9 boards. Fellow big man Justine Baltazar notched a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Blue Eagles stand at 9-0 while the Green Archers fall to 7-1 in the tournament.

Things heated up after halftime as the Archers came surging on the back of Justin Baltazar and Aljun Melecio. After back-to-back buckets by the lofty big man, Melecio chipped in 5 quick points off a steal and score plus a long bomb in the next possession to tie the game, 39-all. Then they rolled on to seize their first lead off two more Baltazar post-ups, 44-41.

At the last possession of the period, Mike Nieto busted out a spin move to inch Ateneo within one, 52-53, entering the 4th.

The Blue Eagles reanchored their hold following a pull-up trey from Jolo Mendoza, 57-53, after blowing a double-digit lead in the first half. But the Archers stormed right back, ensuing a back-and-forth tussle in the last two minutes.

The game reportedly raised P100,000 for the medical expenses of longtime announcer Rolly Manlapaz, who has been out from duty due to an undisclosed illness.
