Get ready with Miss International 2016 and mental health advocate, Kylie Verzosa
When you speak for mental health awareness, it’s important you take care of your own too

[Editor’s Note: The Get Ready with Me (GRWM) article series features the morning routines of people from different walks of life, from their first grabs to the way they get ready for work, and to the items they can’t live without.

Kylie Verzosa is known for many things: the Miss International 2016 title, her roles in films and television series, and of course, her beauty.

From the moment she received her 2016 crown and her beauty queen title, she’s lived her life under the limelight, and she wasn’t exempted from the difficulties that this industry presented. Stigma came with the title. After all, the origin and evolution of beauty pageants are surrounded by complicated debates, especially in 2020.

Kylie proved herself a strong woman by using this platform, along with her current career as an actress and a host, to forward her advocacy. Even past her reign, she continues to champion mental health awareness with her active Facebook page Mental Health Matters and by continuously participating in talks and campaigns on the topic.

She also places the same importance to her own mental health in her daily life. When the quarantine hit, she knew she had to be firm in her mindset in taking charge of her daily life at home and in her career.

She continues to be on top of her career as an actress in her latest project, the Netflix original Love The Way U Lie, set to premiere on Netflix Asia this August 20.

FIRST GRAB. The first thing I do when I open my eyes when I don’t have work… is to grab my phone and snooze the alarm!

When I do have work, I get up on the first alarm. Every Monday, I play my go-to playlist on Spotify. I love listening to uplifting music to kickstart my week.

I also make it a point to give myself quiet time and visualize how I want my day to go, aligning my thoughts and getting myself ready to be productive throughout the day.

SKINCARE ESSENTIALS. I use a mix of different brands – Olay moisturizer, Drunk Elephant, La Mer toner and moisturizer, Shu Uemura cleanser, Origins Original Skin Moisturiser, and Sukin day cream in the day time.

I try to be gentle on my face and to massage upwards. I also have the Aivee Lift just to reinvigorate my skin after I put the oils and moisturizers.

For self-care hair treatment, I use Pantene collagen, this keeps my hair healthy and fresh from the salon vibe.

BEFORE I START. I have this specific routine of exercising before working. Doing my daily yoga and HIIT training before heading out to my desk helps me have a clear mind and outlook to be more productive. It gives me that balance of being emotionally and mentally ready to accomplish my to-do list.

IF I MUST GO. I don’t get to go out much, so when I do, I like to dress up and put on my favorite Avon products. I always go for a full pant outfit, a cute top from a local online store, and my jeans. I match it up with different masks I received during this quarantine season. I like my Boom Sason masks or my O2 masks, and my Nopeet face shield.

IF I’M STAYING IN. I’ve been obsessing with cute pajama prints lately! And I also love lounge wear. So both of them are my everyday wear now.

There are so many local brands that have made their own unique loungewear and cute pajamas like White Label Intimates, AVA The Brand, Sleepwear Mnl, to name a few!

These comfy clothes makes the idea of “staying at home” more bearable to be honest, especially for someone like me who loves dressing up.

FAVE DELIVERS. GrabFood and foodpanda never fail. MetroMart saves me from my grocery runs without the worry of having to actually go out.

I’ve also been addicted to Yogurt drinks from Koomi and healthy Yogurt drinks like the ones from FRNK.

I’ve been buying and receiving a lot of plants and furniture too. Brands like Ren Marble, Bondi Studios, The Laceleaf, and Happy Plant are all my “happy” brands!

As someone with a Business Management Degree and coming from a family who owns a business, I value the importance of appreciation with the hard work and passion that comes with each output that local businesses invest in.

Now is the best time to show support for local businesses!

ROUTINE REMINDERS. Since the quarantine started, I dedicated my time to creating a routine that I know will work for me.

I allowed myself to not overdo things. I did not give in to the mindset that allowed this isolation to control me and my mental state. Instead, I focused on taking things at my own pace. After a while, I successfully added in daily tasks, having my own working space and working while following a schedule. Gradually, I was able to build a healthy routine that works for me.

This is my routine now: I wake up, take a shower, do yoga, work, go for a run outdoors with my dogs Nuggie and Leo.

COME BACK HOME. Handwashing with soap and water is a MUST. When I’m out, I use alcohol to sanitize my hands. Groceries and deliveries are all sanitized at a specific place in my house too.
