Senators push for Ramon Revilla Sr as National Artist

Two senators have filed separate resolutions nominating former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr to the screening committee for the National Artist Awards.

In resolutions dated July 27 and July 29, senators Manny Pacquiao and Sherwin Gatchalian said that Revilla Sr, who died on June 26, deserved to be nominated.

“Ramon Revilla Sr is a renowned entertainment icon, actor, producer, writer and director, and a public servant,” said Pacquiao in Senate Resolution No. 477.

“Through the years, he has contributed immensely in the development of Philippine art. His movies depicted not only the Filipino way of life, but also our unique culture and strong ideas.”

Gatchalian, echoed Pacquiao’s sentiments and said that the late senator’s contribution to the Philippine entertainment “should not go unrecognized.”

“Senator Ramon Revilla, Sr is an embodiment of talent, intelligence, 6 artistry that makes him befitting of the title of National Artist,” he said.

Revilla Sr, 93 appeared in films such as Nardong Putik: Kilabot ng Cavite, Pepeng Agimat: Sa Daigdig ng Kababalaghan, and Hulihin si Tiagong Akyat, which won him a FAMAS Best Actor award in 1973.

The Order of National Artists is administered by the NCCA and CCP and conferred by the Office of the President. It is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine Arts. 

Among those recognized for their contribution include Kidlat Tahimik for film, Ryan Cayabyab for Music, and Larry Alcala for visual arts. 

Revilla Sr’s son and namesake Bong Revilla is a senator. – Rappler.com
