'You may have the power now but it will not be forever,' Toni Gonzaga says of those who voted against ABS-CBN's franchise renewal

Toni Gonzaga said her heart breaks for the employees about to lose their jobs in ABS-CBN after a House panel rejected the network’s franchise renewal last July 10.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, July 18, the singer-actress wrote that it was painful for her to open her messages knowing that many of the people she worked with are about to be retrenched.

“Every day ang sakit magbukas ng Viber dahil nagpapaalam na lahat ng mga katrabaho namin samin,” she said.  “Sa lahat ng nasa posisyon ngayon, hindi namin makakalimutan ang ginawa ‘nyo sa mga trabahador ng ABS-CBN. You may have the power now but it will not be forever. I believe that no matter who the president is, Jesus is still king and He is the name above all names.”

(Every day it becomes painful to open Viber because so many of the people we worked with are saying goodbye. To those in power, we will not forget what you’ve done to the ABS-CBN workers. You may have the power now but it will not be forever. I believe that no matter who the president is, Jesus is still king and He is the name above all names.)

She said she continues to pray for everyone, adding that the situation will eventually get better.

“Just like the positions of the people in power today, what we are going through will not last forever. Troubles come to pass, they don’t stay. Jesus said, when you go through deep waters I will be with you. One day He [will] wipe these tears away and replace it with joy beyond compare. Babangon tayong lahat muli (We will rise again).”

In a follow-up post, Toni clarified that the statement is not about “putting blame on people in position.”

“This is to remind our Kapamilyas, there is hope. There’s still tomorrow. We will not forget what the people who have power did to us and we respect their decision with all humility.

“As one, we will also continue to stand up for our company who gave us so many opportunities to help our families. We don’t know what the future will bring. But we know God is holding us in the palm of His hand.”

On Saturday, Toni was spotted with sister Alex at the noise barrage held outside ABS-CBN.

ABS-CBN stopped its free television and radio operations on May 5 to comply with the shutdown order of the National Telecommunications Commission, following the expiration on May 4 of the network’s congressional franchise.
