(UPDATED) The Bureau of Customs says the shipment was declared as 'work table benches' from Malaysia

Two Chinese men were arrested in Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija over a shipment of shabu with an estimated street value of P1.632 billion, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) said on Saturday, October 31.

The BOC said in a press statement that the late night operation on Friday, October 30, involved  the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), BOC Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group.

The BOC statement described the two who were apprehended as “Chinese nationals” but did not provide their names or other details.

Later, in a statement sent to media, PDEA Central Luzon Director Christian Frivaldo identified the suspects as Jayson Tang and James Ong, both of legal age.

According to the BOC, the shipment declared as “work bench tables” arrived at the PAL PSI Warehouse on October 24. Based on records, the shipper is Ywlee 87 Trading of Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, while the consignee is Allejam International Trading in Manila.

Upon examination, the shipment was found to contain 240 packs of  methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu.

The team proceeded with controlled delivery operations – the team pretended to deliver the cargo – leading to the arrest of the two Chinese who had presented themselves as the claimants of the shipment.

“BOC-NAIA formally turned over the seized illegal drugs to the PDEA for further profiling and case build up against the importers and other responsible persons, and inquest of apprehended claimants for violation of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 in relation to Section 1401 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act,” the BOC said.

The agency added that since January 2020, 42 shipments of illegal drugs had been intercepted in the country’s ports. – With a report from Jun Malig/Rappler.com
