Cebu governor Davide to swear in senator-elect Risa Hontiveros

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Senator-elect Ana Theresia "Risa" Hontiveros will be sworn in by Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III on Sunday, June 19.

In a statement sent to media, Hontiveros said she chose to take her oath in Cebu because "she has always ranked top 12 in the province's senatorial choices since 2010."

Hontiveros won a Senate seat in last month's elections, placing 9th in the senatorial race with 15,915,213 votes.

In the vote-rich province of Cebu – home to 2.7 million voters – Hontiveros obtained 816,000 votes.

She is set to take her oath at the Cebu provincial capitol, a month after she was officially proclaimed senator on May 19.

This is Hontiveros' 3rd time running for the Senate, after she lost in the 2010 national elections and the 2013 midterm elections. (READ: Risa Hontiveros finally wins Senate seat: 'We defied gravity')

Hontiveros ran under the banner of the Liberal Party (LP). Davide, who won another term as governor in last month's elections, is also an LP member.

Before the May polls, Cebu was a stronghold of the LP, the party of outgoing President Benigno Aquino III, with 33 of 44 municipal mayors belonging to the party.

Hontiveros was a former Akbayan partylist representative and director of the state-run Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth). –
