14 killed, 92 arrested in Bulacan anti-crime drive

MANILA, Philippines (3RD UPDATE) – Bulacan cops have taken down 14 criminal suspects, and arrested at least 92 in separate operations during a province-wide anti-crime drive on Wednesday, August 1.

The death count: In total, the 14 dead consist of 8 drug suspects, 4 suspected robbers, and 2 suspected motorcycle thieves.

Bulacan cops first released a consolidated count at the 12-hour mark of the anti-crime sweep, counting 12 suspects dying and 29 others arrested in separate police operations.

After the next 12 hours, police reported the death of 2 more drug suspects and the arrest of 63 others.

Suspects ‘fought back’: Seven drug suspects were identified by cops as: Eugenio Tan, Alden Gerobeise, Mark Chester Manalang alias Amang, Dexter Dispo alias Boyet, a certain Ogag, an alias Keng-keng, and an alias Biboy.

“All resisted arrest by firing their guns at arresting police operatives in buy-bust operations conducted in the town of Sta Maria, Malolos, Pulilan, Obando, Baliwag, and Hagonoy respectively,” Bulacan police said. (READ: Half of Filipinos don't believe cops' 'nanlaban' line – SWS survey)

Alias Biboy and the 8th drug suspect— an "unidentified cohort" —allegedly shot it out with cops in San Rafael, Bulacan, after a buy-bust operation went wrong.

The 4 alleged robbers have yet to be named. Cops said 3 of them “took a heist” in a San Rafael town convenience store and escaped through a Toyota sedan to Barangay Bulihan in Malolos. There, they allegedly tried to break into a house, but when cops arrived to stop them, they allegedly chose to engage in a shootout that led to their deaths.

The two suspected motorcycle thieves – identified only as “a certain Bogart and an alias Albina” –allegedly tried to sell a stolen motorcycle in San Jose del Monte. Cops tried to snare them through an entrapment operation, but they sensed the policemen, prompting them to allegedly “fire their guns.”  The cops said both were killed in the shootout.

The arrested: Police said a total of 55 drug suspects, including 3 minors, were apprehended in the towns of Plaridel, Balagtas, Pandi, San Ildefonso, Calumpit, Bocaue, Marilao, Guiguinto, Bocaue, Bustos, Baliwag, Hagonoy, and the Cities of San Jose del Monte, Malolos, and Meycauayan.

Police also noted some 29 wanted persons, including a barangay councilor, were arrested in various manhunt operations.

Some 7 suspects were arrested for allegedly gambling in Hagonoy town in southern Bulacan, while one person was snared after provincial mobile force cops executed a search warrant and found illegal firearms and suspected illegal drugs in his home.

Items seized: The anti-drug operations yielded 119 plastic sachets of suspected shabu, 6 plastic sachets of dried marijuana leaves, and buy-bust money.

Other operations yielded various firearms suspected to be illegally kept by the arrested. – Rappler.com
