MANILA, Philippines – Makati Mayor Abby Binay said on Friday, March 29 that she was banking on her performance in past 3 years – and not her prominent family name – to win her reelection bid.
“Mainit lang ang panahon, ngunit mukhang 'di naman magiging mainit ang labanan (The weather is hot, but it looks like it won't be a heated fight),” Binay told reporters ahead of her proclamation rally along Lawton Avenue on Friday, March 29.
Binay is running against her brother, former Makati mayor Jejomar Erwin "Junjun" Binay Jr and 3 other candidates.
“So again, hindi ko tinatayuan ang pangalan ko. Di ko tinatayuan ang apelyido ko. Ang tinatayuan ko 'yung nagawa ko sa 3 taon na binigyan nila ko ng pagkakaton na maglingkod sa kanila,” Binay said.
(So again, I’m not banking on my name. I’m not banking on my surname. What I’m banking on is what I’ve done in the past 3 years that they gave me the chance to serve them.)
The battle for the Makati mayor is expected to be a hot race, with the Binay siblings pitted against each other – an arrangement that their own father, former Vice President Jejomar Binay, had allowed.
Abby is running under the the elder Binay's United Nationalist Alliance, while Junjun formed his own local party, Una Ang Makati.
Other candidates vying for Makati mayor are Ricardo Yabut (Bigkis Pinoy), Carmelle Alanzalon (independent), and Renato Bondal (independent), who previously threw multiple corruption allegations against Jejomar Binay and Junjun Binay. – Rappler.com
