OLONGAPO CITY, Philippines - In an upset victory, Rolen Paulino of the Sulong Zambales party won over the Gordon political clan, ending the grip of the family in Olongapo City politics.
Paulino garnered 40,664 votes to win over Anne Marie Gordon, who got 27,648 votes, and her nephew, Bugsy delos Reyes, who got 10,093 votes.
Paulino ended the almost-quarter-century grip of the Gordon political clan in Olongapo City.
During his proclamation which was presided over by Comelec supervisor Atty. Dictador Untayao, Paulino underscored his historic win by saying that “politics is now over, there is a new face of Olongapo, and Olongapo has a new story."
He added, addressing the residents of Olongapo: “Whether or not you voted for me, I am still your Mayor."
Paulino also alluded to the incident where he kicked down the door of Gordon College president Arlida Pame, due to the latter's allegations that vote buying was going on inside the premises. For Paulino, although the elections were “complicated, it was [generally] peaceful and orderly."
Projecting himself as a man of the masses, Paulino said, "Pwede ka pala manalo kahit walang pera (You can win even if you don't have money)."
Among the many promises that Paulino made to his supporters is that he will drastically decrease the cost of doing business in the city, remove the garbage fees of residents, be an anti-coal plant proponent, and make the LGU transparent in its fiscal dealings and free it of corruption.
Paulino ran with congressional candidate for 1st district of Zambales Jeffrey Khonghun, who is now also the official winner of the contest against James “Bong” Gordon Jr. - Rappler.com
