MANILA, Philippines – The House of Representatives on Thursday, June 4, adopted the resolution asking the anti-graft court to grant the petition of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for house arrest.
The resolution cites humanitarian reasons in endorsing the house arrest plea of Arroyo, now representative of Pampanga province.
Arroyo is suffering from "multiple cervical spondylosis" or the wearing off of the bones. She is detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center over a P366-million plunder charge.
The Arroyo camp filed a petition for house arrest in April, with her lawyers arguing that the option is allowed under the law.
The House resolution is, however, non-binding. The decision over Arroyo's detention arrangements still rests with the Sandiganbayan.
On Thursday, the Sandiganbayan heard the case and asked the Arroyo camp to submit photos of her houses, reports said. – Angela Casauay/Rappler.com
