People pay tribute to former senator Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr in different parts of Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines – Amid the Duterte administration’s subdued commemoration of the historic event that paved the Philippines’ return to democracy, some people took to the streets and tied yellow ribbons around Metro Manila for the 35th death anniversary of former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

At around 5 am on Tuesday, August 21, several people were seen tying ribbons along Doña Julia Vargas Avenue in Pasig City, and later, in other areas.

Before Aquino returned to the Philippines from political exile in the US, his friends and supporters  tied yellow ribbons along his supposed path from the airport to his Times Street home in Quezon City to  to welcome him, but he never saw them as was assassinated upon disembarking from his plane at the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983.

The move was inspired by the song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree.”
