China continues to get embroiled in controversies in the middle of a pandemic while evading allegations it downplayed and covered up the outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan in its early days.

China has implemented the National Security Law in Hong Kong, clashed in a border dispute with India, and maintained aggressiveness in the South China Sea, among others.

On Wednesday, August 12, Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug talks to Lye Liang Fook on China’s behavior during the coronavirus pandemic and why it is making all these moves.

Lye is a senior fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. His research interests include politics in China, and its foreign policy and relations.

Can we expect China’s aggression to continue in the coming months? How can countries respond?
