Gymnast Carlos Yulo becomes the second Filipino to make it to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

MANILA, Philippines – Gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo becomes the second Filipino to secure a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 19-year-old placed 18th out of 160 athletes in the world to advance to the men’s individual all-around final, while also qualifying for the floor exercise final at 7th place in the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.

Yulo got the chance to compete in the Olympics even as he fell in the world championships’ top 12 in the individual all-around since the qualifying mark excluded countries which already qualified prior to the event.

The qualification process has the top 3 countries from the 2018 World Championships earning automatic slots, followed by the top 9 teams from the 2019 World Championships, excluding the top 3 that qualified from 2018.

Yulo became the second local athlete after pole vaulter EJ Obiena to qualify for the biggest quadrennial sporting event slated July 24 to August 9 in Tokyo, Japan. – Rappler.com
