CESAFI: Wildcats clinch first win in OT, Magis Eagles extend streak

CEBU CITY, Philippines – It took an overtime for the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) to clinch its first win of the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) collegiate basketball competition as the Wildcats prevailed over the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters on Saturday, August 15, at the Cebu Coliseum.

With the 92-87 overtime win over ther Webmasters, the Wildcats ended a 3-game losing streak. The regulation ended at 77-all.

Joshua Romelle Dela Cerna, who had been topscoring for the Wildcats in their previous matches, was finally vindicated after he led the CIT-U this time to victory with 34 points and 11 rebounds before he fouled out with less than 3 minutes left in the first 5-minute extension this season.

Down by 7 points going into the final canto, the Webmasters slowly cut away at the Wildcats' lead to tie the ballgame at 71-all with Garciano Puerto Jr. splitting his charities after he was fouled by John Anthony Lucena with barely 3 minutes left in the regulation.

As Peter Paul Codilla gave the Webmasters the lead at 73-71 going into the last two minutes, Steven Bucao drew a foul and sank one of his gift shots to bring the Wildcats at just a point behind, 72-73.

Clint Suelto then gave the Webmasters a 3-point advantage, 75-72, with 1:57 left. However, his teammate Melvin Butohan was caught fouling Dela Cerna in the return play.

Dela Cerna then sank both his free throws to once again allow the Wildcats to come within a point, 74-75, with just 60 seconds left.

The ball stayed with the Wildcats as Dimco won the rebound and immediately scored to wrestle the lead, 76-75, from the Webmasters. In the process, he draw a foul from Earldred Cesar Montilla and earned a bonus shot which he successfully converted to extend the Wildcats lead to 77-75.

With 20 seconds left, Justine Dacalos went for a layup for a 77-all and forced an overtime.

Jose Marlo Pono started the 5-minute extension with a trey with his teammates Dimco and Dela Cerna splitting their charities to give the Wildcats the lead at 86-78 at the 3:52 mark.

With 3 minutes left, Dela Cerna fouled out after he was caught touching Puerto who then sank his free throws to cut the Wildcats' 8-point lead to 6, 80-86. This seemed to bolster the Webmasters' spirits as they once again came closer to again bring the game to a deadlock at 87 on a gift shot from Puerto.

On the verge of finally winning their first game of the 2015 season, Bucao kept the Wildcats' hopes alive with a shot from the rainbow for a 90-87 advantage with just seconds left. Dimco sealed the win for the Wildcats with his basket, 92-87, as Dacalos missed his attempt in the return play.

The loss gave the Webmasters a 2-2 win-loss record.
