PH drops last 3x3 World Cup match vs Hungary

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Perlas Pilipinas ended its FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2018 campaign with a loss to Hungary, 15-18, on Sunday, June 10, at the Philippine Arena.

Afril Bernardino towed the Philippines to a 4-point lead, 10-6, in the last 4:30 minutes of the game, but Dóra Medgyessy drew a foul from the 3-time UAAP MVP that sent the nationals into foul trouble.

World no. 16 Bettina Bozóki later sank two freebies that gave the lead to Hungary and the 2017 runner-up closed out the game with two Bozóki layups and a jumper by Medgyessy.

Janine Pontejos led Perlas anew, tallying a 7-point finish that was punctuated by back-to-back two-pointers early in the game.

Earlier, Spain held off Janine Pontejos' 13-point outburst and eliminated the Philippines from quarterfinal contention.

The Filipinas finished the tournament with a 0-4 record in the women's Pool D.

Hungary’s win forced a 3-way tie with Spain and Netherlands at 3-1, but the Dutch were knocked out of contention based on the tiebreak rule.

China was the first team to sweep the elimination round to top the women’s Pool B. France also advanced to the knockout stages after finishing at 2nd place.

The Scores:

Hungary (18) – Bozóki 8, Medgyessey 8, Theodorean 1, Rujàk 1.

Philippines (15) – Pontejos 7, Bernardino 4, Miranda 3, Animam 1.
