Gilas Cadets end FilOil campaign with win over EAC

MANILA, Philippines - The Gilas cadets downed the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals, 82-69, to end on a high note their campaign in the 12th FIlOil Preseason Cup Tuesday, June 12, at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Matt Nieto topscored for the Cadets with 15 points on 4/7 shooting from beyond the arc. Ken Tuffin followed with 13 points on top of 5 rebounds and two steals.

Gilas opened the match strong with an 11-0 run giving them to 13-2 lead. The Generals responded with a 10-0 run of their own fuelled by JP Maguliano and Vincent Robin bringing the game to a close lead at 13-12.

To extend the lead in favor of the Cadets, Tuffin scattered 5 unanswered points to end the first half at 42-31.

Gilas kept the Generals at bay the entire second half.

Jerome Garcia led the Generals with 15 points with 3 rebounds. Maguliano provided strong support finishing with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Gilas cadets finished with a 4-5  record, failing to qualify for the quarterfinals. EAC was winless in 8 games.

“They just can’t rely on individual talent during games, they have to [improve] consistently,” said Coach Jong Uichico when asked about the biggest lesson the Cadets could take from the tournament and program.

Prior to the national team's match, the Ateneo Blue Eagles kept their perfect 9-0 record, outlasting De La Salle University Green Archers, 81-75.

In the earlier games, the Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates took down the UST Growling Tigers, 93-88.

CJ Perez carried the Pirates with 16 points with 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and a block. Rhanzell Yong, Reymark Caduyac, and Casper Pericas chipped in 15, 12, and 10 markers, respectively.

The San Beda University Red Lions routed the hapless Mapua University Cardinals with a dominating team effort, 60-95.

Javee Mocon led San Beda with 20 points on 8/13 shooting from the field, while big man Eugene Toba chipped in 14 markers along with 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Clint Dolinguez also added 10 points with two triples and 7 rebounds.
