Chris Lutz leaves SMB, joins Meralco Bolts

MANILA, Philippines – Guard Chris Lutz is moving to the Meralco Bolts, the PBA announced via its website and Twitter account Monday, January 16.

The 31-year-old unrestricted free agent signed with the Bolts following spending 6 years with the San Miguel Beermen franchise.

Lutz, whom San Miguel (then Petron) picked third overall in the 2011 draft, had been battling injuries through last season and has fallen out of rotation amid coach Leo Austria's guard-heavy roster.

The 3-time champion, who has career averages of 7.8 points. 2.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists, will provide experience and firepower to a Meralco team that's struggling in the Philippine Cup for the second straight season.

Lutz's move comes as the Bolts lost veteran Jimmy Alapag, who retired after the team's runner-up finish in the 2016 Governors' Cup.

Lutz is expected to support young guards Chris Newsome and Baser Amer.

The Bolts currently hold a 2-7 record in the season-opening conference with only two games remaining. – Rappler.com
