MANILA, Philippines – Terrence Romeo dropped a conference-high 33 points and the Globalport Batang Pier barely slipped by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 101-99, in the 2016 PBA Governors' Cup on Saturday, August 27 in Legazpi City.
Romeo, who also had 5 assists and shot 13-of-24 field goals, led the scoring for the Batang Pier, who won their third straight game for a 3-4 record. But team effort carried them when they came charging at the Painters in the final two minutes.
Back-to-back jumpers by Romeo and import Mike Glover trimmed a 5-point deficit to just one with 2:24 remaining before Yousef Taha, who chipped in 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists in 20 minutes, came up with a big one-hander to surge ahead, 98-97, over a minute later.
But Beau Belga wrestled back the lead for Rain or Shine on a well-executed pull-up jump shot just inside the arc, 99-98, with 54 seconds to go.
As usual suspects Romeo and Stanley Pringle waited in the wings, Globalport played another option in Jay Washington, who after failing to convert a quick layup off the inbounds pass, stayed with the play and rebounded his own miss for the game-clinching putback, 100-99, with 27 ticks left.
Import Dior Lowhorn, who had already gotten himself going offensively, tried to tie the game in the dying seconds following Taha's split from the line but his layup from underneath the ring rolled out.
Glover wound up with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Pringle added 16 markers, 3 boards, and 3 dimes. Washington contributed 11 points and 3 rebounds.
Lowhorn led the Painters with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. Beau Belga had 17 points, while Paul Lee and Chris Tiu scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Painters slid to two straight losses for a 3-4 record as well. – Rappler.com
