MANILA, Philippines — The San Miguel Beermen closed the game out on a 27-14 run to zoom past Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 100-85, and win 5 straight in the 2015 PBA Governors' Cup on Sunday, May 31 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen torched its foes with 6 triples during that searing run and turned a precarious 73-71 lead at the 8:21 mark of the fourth into an assured 89-78 edge with 2:40 left.
The shooting clinic did not stop until the final buzzer as San Miguel rose to 5-2.
"The players are so focused and so eager to win the game," said head coach Leo Austria, who shared his team tried to do too much in the first half, allowing Ginebra to keep it close.
A gentle reminder at halftime to trust the process kept the determined Beermen in check.
"They're motivated because of an embarrassing second conference," Austria explained the cause of his team's resurgence. "They want to redeem our team because everybody is expecting us to do well."
Import Arizona Reid led the road to redemption with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists while playmaker Chris Ross had a near-triple double of 19 markers, 9 dimes and 9 boards.
"The biggest factor is Chris Ross. He played really well. I think that's the best performance of his career in the PBA," Austria said.
Marcio Lassiter and Arwind Santos each had 13 and 11 points, respectively. Big man June Mar Fajardo registered 10 points and crashed the boards with 20.
Orlando Johnson and Josh Urbiztondo carried the cudgels for Ginebra with 22 and 20 points, respectively. Johnson added 15 rebounds and 6 assists as the Gin Kings slipped to 2-4.
Japeth Aguilar, whose three-point play early in the fourth cut the deficit to two, finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. — Rappler.com
