WATCH: Golden golf trio surprises Richard Gomez

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Team Philippines chef de mission Richard Gomez admits he did not expect the national women's golf team to immediatley add two golds and a bronze to the country's 2018 Asian Games medal haul.

The Ormoc City mayor himself witnessed Yuka Saso's eagle in the 18th hole, which gave her the gold medal over China's Liu Wenbo.

Saso's golden run, coupled with Bianca Pagdanganan's bronze-winning stint and Lois Kaye Go's No. 17 ranking, also secured the team gold.

"It wasn’t really expected," Gomez told Rappler.

"When Yuka made a putt, it was a putt for eagle and she made it, they got two golds for us so I’m surprised, I’m so happy, it’s a beautiful day for the country."

After Hidilyn Diaz's golden run in weightlifting, a second gold medal was nowhere to be found as some favored medal bets bowed out like gymnastics' Carlos Edriel Yulo, who failed to podium in both the men's vault and men's floor exercise.

Gomez recalled that he prayed hard during the Sunday mass, and his prayers were immediately answered as five medals fell into the Philippines' coffers on Day 8 – including the two bronzes from Jefferson Rhey Loon and Dines Dumaan of pencak silat.

The chef de mission gleamed with hope for more golden accolades to come from boxing, judo and skateboarding in the coming days. – Rappler.com
