Philippines excels in Day 2 of Asia Pacific University Games in Cebu
Philippines asserts its dominance in table tennis and does relatively well in basketball

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Philippines, represented by the University of Cebu (UC) paddlers, reaffirmed their dominance over the Malaysian paddlers as they took the team title in both men’s and women’s divisions of the table tennis competition in the 1st Asia Pacific University Games at the Cebu Provincial Capitol Social Hall on December 5.

Both UC men’s and women’s teams defeated Malaysia, manned by students from Universiti of Teknologi – MARA (UTM) in straight sets, 2-0.

According to tournament director Jessica Honoridez, this is the second meeting for both teams as they also competed against each other last August during the International Sports Fiesta, a mixed competition held in Malaysia wherein the Philippines also won.

Settling for third place were the paddlers from Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) who were also representing the Philippines.

Both Malaysia/UTM and Philippines/CIT-U still have a chance to make their mark in the event with the individual event still to be contested.

UC is also doing well in the basketball contest held this time at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) gym after winning their two games yesterday. The first, by upsetting 2015 CESAFI champion University of San Carlos (USC), 73-65. UC was eliminated in sixth place in this year’s CESAFI season after managing only 4 wins and 8 losses. The Webmasters’ second win was at the expense of Malaysia/UTM, 66-61.

The UC Webmasters is being helmed by newly appointed head coach Atty. Kenneth Kernn Sesante, who was once team captain.

In their games against USC, UC was led by John Cal Jabello and Justine Dacalos with 13 points apiece with Geleant Delator adding 12.

Caesar Ian Ortega topscored for USC with a game-high 20 points. Charles Pepito contributed 17 points and William McAlloney chipped in 16 points, albeit for a losing cause.

The two wins put UC in current second place behind Japan, represented by a team from the Nippon Sports Science University (NSSU), who has yet to concede a game.

Standings as of December 5

1. Japan/NSSU – 2 Wins, 0 Loss

2. Philippines/UC – 2 Wins, 1 Loss

3. Philippines/USPF – 1 Win, 1 Loss

4. Philippines/USC – 1 Win, 2 Losses

5. Malaysia/UTM – 0 Win, 2 Losses

Games December 6 at USC Gym

2pm – Malaysia/UTM vs USPF Panthers

3:30pm – USC vs Japan/NSSU

The champion will be determined by the most number of wins.

After winning their first game against Malaysia on the first day of competition, the USC Warriors, who have no import on their side, couldn’t seem to catch a break as after getting clobbered by the UC Webmasters in the morning, they next got lambasted by the USPF Panthers by 13 points, 74-61, in the afternoon.

USPF highschool standout, Ain Obenza, led the Panthers with 18 points while Karl Langahin, who rained triples in the second half, finished with 17 points. Clyde Avancena added 10 points.

Ortega, Pepito and McAloney continue to lead USC with 11 and 9 points each, respectively.

Early in the day, the USPF Panthers who did not win any game in the 2015 CESAFI, got edged by Japan/NSSU, 71-74.

Meanwhile, hostilities in badminton will begin December 6 at the Metrosports Badminton Courts in Salinas Drive, Lahug. Seeing action are teams from UC, USC and Malaysia. – Rappler.com
