USJR keeps CESAFI slate clean with comeback win over USPF

CEBU CITY, Philippines - The University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars kept their slate clean after clawing back from a 14-point deficit to slip past University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 84-79, in the lone collegiate game of the CESAFI basketball tournament Saturday, August 19, at the New Cebu Coliseum.

In the high school division, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors prevailed over the Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Baby Cobras, 78-73, in overtime after the regulation game ended in 69-all.

Other games had Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons edging Don Bosco Technology Center DBTC Greywolves, 62-60, and the University of Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters finally posting their first win this season at the expense of the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CITU) Wildcats, 77-62.

Jaybie Mantilla had a triple double after topscoring for the Jaguars with 20 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.Three other Jaguars scored in double figures - Ralph Jude Dinolan with 16 points, Nichole John Ubalde with 12 points and Tricky Dyn Peromingan with 11 points.

The Panthers had 21 points from Lyndon Colina and 13 points from Lugie Colina.  

It had looked like the Panthers was finally going to win their second game of the season when they posted a 14-point lead over the Jaguars, 53-39, in the third quarter.

However, the Jaguars managed to slowly claw back into the ballgame until they were able to tie the game at 73-all on Dinolan’s trey with 3:20 left in the final canto.

The Panthers then wrestled back the lead at 76-73 but back-to-back baskets from Mantilla stumped them at 76-77.

Mike Patalinghug managed to tie the game again at 77-all by sinking one of his charities with 39 seconds left in the ballgame.

Ubalde’s shot from the rainbow allowed the Jaguars to distance from the Panthers and back-to-back baskets from Mantilla and Julius Pacanuayan eventually denied them a win.

Topscoring for the winning teams in the secondary division were John Vincent Galarse with 17 points for the CEC Dragons, John Bryl Cuyos with 21 points for the UC Junior Webmasters and Clint Anthony Octaviano with 17 points for the USC Baby Warriors.

Topscoring for the losing teams were Gyle Patrick Montaño who exploded with 30 points for the SWU-Phinma Baby Cobras, Kirk Suson with 17 points for the CITU Wildkittens and Grenald Malubay with 18 points for the DBTC Greywolves.
