Indonesia sweeps Philippines in SEA Games women's volley opener

MANILA, Philippines – Indonesia swept the Philippines, 25-22, 25-20, 25-14, in the opening match of women's volleyball at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Singapore on Wednesday, June 10.

Aprilia Manganang topscored for the Indonesians with 13 points on 12 kills and a block. Maya Kurnia Indri Sari and Amalia Fajrina Nabila added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

UAAP two-time MVP Alyssa Valdez was the only player in double figures for the Philippines with 15 points. Jaja Santiago added 7 markers and a block while Rachel Anne Daquis had 4.

The Philippines stayed within striking distance through the first two sets but Indonesia created an early 9-4 edge in the third and coasted the rest of the way.

The Philippines dropped its first match in the SEA Games since last participating in 2005. Boasting a squad composed of top collegiate and semi-professional stars, the country is eyeing to win its first gold medal in the event since 1993. –
