Shaq delos Santos debuts as head coach of women's national volleyball team

MANILA, Philippines – Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc (LVPI) named 2018 PSL Grand Prix champion Petron coach Shaq delos Santos as the new head coach of the women's national team.

Delos Santos will officially take over the preparations for the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, and the 2018 Asian Volleyball Championships. He will also continue to train the national team until the 2019 Southeast Asian Games to be held in the Philippines.

Delos Santos previously served the national team as part of the coaching staff of Odjie Mamon in the 2003 Vietnam Southeast Asian Games, where the Philippines clinched a bronze medal.

The appointment came after multi-titled coach Ramil de Jesus resigned after holding two tryouts prior to the end of UAAP Season 80. The 11-time UAAP champion coach led the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers to their 3rd 3-peat championship.

Delos Santos was the last local coach to beat De Jesus for championship titles, which included steering the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses to the UAAP Season 72 crown over DLSU, as well as Petron to the 2018 PSL Grand Prix title against F2 Logistics last May.

The newly-appointed head coach was also mentored by De Jesus in Far Eastern University.

Current UST head coach Emilio "Kung Fu" Reyes and Foton assistant coach Bryan Esquibel will join Delos Santos' coaching staff in the national team. – Rappler.com
