MANILA, Philippines – The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) may have unintentionally revealed the details of the plot and combat of Resident Evil 7. The listing described the general premise of the game's plot, the weaponry involved, and the new main character of the title.
The description has been deleted as of writing but Gematsu was able to obtain and save a copy of the listing’s content.
The listing detailed that players will be taking on the role of Ethan, a man in search of his wife in a “derelict mansion.” His arsenal for killing mutant creatures includes “pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives, and chainsaws.”
“Combat is accompanied by realistic gunfire, screams of pain, and exaggerated blood-splatter effects,” the description adds.
As expected of every Resident Evil title, the game will be a bloody mess involving dismembered limbs, impaled bodies and faces, and deformed corpses. Shovels could be a running theme as well. (Rappler Picks: Our 5 favorite E3 trailers and videos)
“As players progress through the story, cutscenes can depict instances of gore and intense acts of violence: a character’s arm dismembered by a chainsaw; a man’s leg taken off at the knee with a shovel; a character impaled through the face with a shovel. Some areas also depict mutilated corpses with exposed organs/viscera,” the listing states.
Though it was taken down, the ESRB confirmed with Polygon that the original listing was accurate. They also explained the reason for the take down.
“The rating is accurate and was posted as part of our regular process for announcing ratings after they have been assigned. Capcom requested the rating information be removed, and we’re working with them to determine a new posting date,” their statement reads.
