Canadians tell Americans: #ComeToCanada

MANILA, Philippines – It appears Canadians are pretty willing to take in Americans who want to leave the United States following the victory of President-elect Donald Trump.

On election day, just as the results were beginning to lean in favor of the Republican candidate, social media users noticed that Canada's immigration website was down – presumably due to high site traffic.

At around the same time, it was reported that searches for the word "emigrate" suddenly spiked.

I think if Trump wins, it will be like brexit, there is no one will know what to do. #usvote #USElection2016 pic.twitter.com/kTTg4ZoJ1a — Andrei (@dobry_hlopec) November 9, 2016

Americans also began tweeting their intentions – whether serious or just half-meant – to leave the US in favor of their northern neighbor.

It didn't take long for some Canadians to start using the hashtag #ComeToCanada.

Prominent personalities who have spoken out about leaving the US should Trump win have been urged to actually do it.

One man, however, doesn't think Canada is far enough.

You think running away to Canada will save you all.. Trump is just gonna turn us into a parking lot for his jets. @elonmusk I'm in for Mars. — Nick (@Nick28T) November 9, 2016

For Americans who do leave, they won't have to worry about cold, lonely Canadian nights. Here's an amusing tweet that could help them find love.

Are you single ... and didn't vote for Trump? This dating site will help you find love in Canada. https://t.co/NIKIY4hycr — AJ+ (@ajplus) November 9, 2016

This man, meanwhile, is the exception – he refuses to leave America for the land famous for its maple syrup.

I am not moving to Canada, not surprised by white supremacists & misogynists, and not afraid of Donald Trump. We have got to get to work. — Anil Dash (@anildash) November 9, 2016

Whether or not Canada does get an influx of immigrants from the US remains to be seen, but it's at least comforting that the Americans seem to be welcome there.
