This comes amid warnings against proposed Chinese investments in the country's strategic frontier

The Naval Forces North Luzon (NFNL) conducted a symbolic flag-raising ceremony on Fuga Island in Cagayan province on Saturday, August 8, amid renewed warnings against proposed Chinese investments in the strategic frontier in the Philippines’ northernmost tip.

The flag-raising ceremony was led by NFNL deputy commander for Marine operations Colonel Simplitius Adecer and commander of Marine Battalion Landing Team 10 Colonel Rowan Rimas.

They were joined by Fuga barangay chairman Melchor Visario, other barangay officials, residents, teachers, and students.

Fuga is a 10,000-hectare island that is part of Aparri town in Cagayan, which is home to a small community of Filipinos. It is the country’s second northernmost island group and strategically located at waterways intersecting the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

A naval detachment was established on the island following concerns over Chinese plans to set up a $2-billion ‘smart city’ on the island. Critics warned this move has strategic impact on national security.

The concerns prompted the Department of National Defense to seek a review of the planned investments.

A naval station will soon be built on the island. – Rappler.com
