Robots for disaster preparedness

Forget Terminator, these robots are out to save lives and if they fall short of that at the moment – at least they amuse us to no end!

This robot challenge is all about disaster preparedness, and it’s called the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals 2015.
The event wrapped up Saturday in Pomona, California.
The use of robots in disasters is based on a simple fact: a robot can go where people can’t.
The folks at DARPA wanted to simulate real life situations in disasters.
So they took out the safety ropes – if the robots fell they fell hard, though were given a chance to get back up.
Communication tethers were also taken out and finalists had to rely on wireless technology to communicate with their human operators.
The power cords were also taken out so robots had to carry an hour’s worth of battery to hurdle the challenge. – Rappler.com
